Poem No. 106

5 am. Blackness on Sea

In a field by Blackness Castle

Ten black bullocks sleep

Across the grey dawn water

The three mighty bridges sweep

Down the hill by the Lobster Pot

All is quiet and still

Only the sound of a woodpigeon

Breaks the morning chill

There are no dogs yet to walk

No cars to try and park

Nothing but tranquillity

So shortly after dark

Soon the world will stir again

And people start to wake

A human canine promenade

Up to the castle gate

But from a St Ninians window

There's nothing yet to see

Except the new dawn’s beauty

That surrounds Blackness on Sea
