Poem No. 14

Not Tonight

POEM Not tonight he scoffed as he picked up and tossed the vessel around

Across the top of the waves, rising up and crashing back down

The smashing of timber, the tearing of sails

Creaking and cracking unleashing shuddering wails

Neptune, venting his anger with all of his might

Shrieking and bellowing out of the darkness of the night

With a thundering blow and a harrowing roar

The calm, still night remained still and calm and no more

The poor sailors on board were praying for their lives

Thinking of their loved ones, their children, their wives

They thought it was over, they wouldn't see the morning

When all of a sudden over the crashing of waves they could hear voices calling

They thought it was Angels, an answer to their prayers

It was Angels of a kind, the lifeboat station had seen their red flares

Selfless commitment to rescuing others

In the middle of the night, leaving their lovers

These hero's succeeded in saving all on board

The next challenge would be getting safely to shore

A light shone out across the bay

It looked like it was coming from Blackness on Sea way

The crew rowed hard against the tide

With nothing to go by except that guiding light

As they got closer, nearly on shore

They realised it was the Lobster Pot Inn

With a wide open door The landlord ran out to help anyway he could

He'd put the fire on and laid out hot food

He saw the flare through the dark of the night

And it was him that sent out that beacon, that bright guiding light
