Poem No 159

POEM TITLE Ode To Thee

POEM

Mythic Goddess of these lowlands

Rising up in deepest night

Til Break of dawn proclaims itself

A Firth of Forth Decree

From ancient beds of oyster

Once fertile but long hence gone

A somber wisdom arises from the

Bogle of Blackness on Sea

Tides Aweigh to our wee village

Carry philosophic age-auld lessons

Her prizes sage an’ keenly wise

An’ of no one man’s claim

Protect us wi’ these her blessings

Below these dusky Scottish skies

From the Lighthouse atop Bass Rock

To the Grey of the forted Castle

Sailing fjord to firth and centuries on

The lobstermen hath seen

Their bounty rise an’ steeply fall

Beholden to this braid estuary

Stirring tidal churn of deep ebon

To these shores, a welcome place

Shines in the dark from another age

On fog-shroud’d Blackness Bay

Rare summery nights wi’ blanketing stars

that glisten upon the waves

Stormy wakes beckon ye home

Her foreshores of salty white gold

The warmth an’ eternal timelessness

Of yer old stone an’ storied inn

Enduring as any of a special childhood friend

From first Gud Mornin’ til bell doth ring

We raise our pints to thee

Our Lobster Pot, our home from home

A pearl, auld Blackness on Sea
