Poem No.117

POEM TITLE The Beginner Solo Cyclist’s Guide, Section 4: Leith to Blackness-On-Sea

POEM

Over everything we recognise the wish to have arrived.

Enter the village sweaty from the woods beside the firth

behind you trailing the entire city, panniers stuffed

with tenements and closes.

Somewhere between the Almond and the bridges you

turned tourist. You should embrace this –

savour time, temporary stranger.

Now, welcome the miracle of the full pint before you.

All of creation is in this glass; the years’ turning,

monthly cycles of the moon and tide,

the gentle breath of whoever you sleep next to;

count minutes in gulps, you’ve now arrived.
