POEM TITLE

To be or not to be in Blackness on Sea

POEM

To be or not to be in Blackness on Sea

(Elsinore was set in Blackness Castle for scenes

in Franco Zeffirelli’s film of ‘Hamlet’)

You brown and mottled lobsters all,

come crawl into my Scottish parlour creel,

you’ll find, alas, there’s no way out

until you’re hauled aboard a boat

and plopped into a hotter pot,

where you’ll turn red and, sadly, dead.

The Lobster Pot’s a goodly prison,

you’ll stroll into the parlour, baited well

with burgers, beer and twice fried chips,

and, once inside and soused, it’s hard to leave

until your designated driver hauls you out

and puts you, like a sticky toffee pud, to bed.

Hamlet would choose ‘to be’ in Blackness on Sea,

if there is steak and lobster still for tea!
