POEM TITLE This Is Me
POEM This is me, the world is mine before me
This is me, the sky is mine above me
This is me, the waves are mine below me
I dream of golden times to come, this is me.
I shall be a bold and cutthroat pirate
Set sail on seven seas with lusty crew
I’d make my baddest teacher walk the plank
To face the hungry Kraken far below.
Or maybe sink within the crystal pool below me
Be rescued by a friendly mermaid swimming near
Seaweed wreathed, assuming human form
For one day only: rewarded for her kindly deed.
We’d race along the windswept shore together
Build castles from the wet sands near the waves
And watch the waves devour our efforts
Wash over all our letters in the sand.
Come evening with the slowly dying sun
She must return to home, the darkening sea
I’d hold her hand and kiss her tenderly
My tears disguised by flying salty spray.
Perhaps I’ll be a spaceman
And leave the earth beneath
I’d fly to Mars and Venus
Then home again to Leith.
I could be an eco-warrior
Free the world of all its woes
Free a lobster from a lobster pot
Despite black looks from Lobster Pot ashore.
But hark, that is my parents calling
Holiday or not, it’s suppertime young lad
Tomorrow I’ll return and dream some more
at this same pool along the Blackness shore.
